If You Wouldn’t Eat It, Don’t Put It On Your Skin

Your skin is your biggest organ. Everything you put on it will be absorbed by your body. Due to all the soaps, shampoos, lotions, crèmes, makeups, perfumes, nail polishes and make-up removers we put on our bodies, we get exposed to hundreds of different chemicals every day. Over the long-term, this will certainly affect our health.

I used to put on makeup every single day and still do on some days. Why? Because it is great at covering up my unhealthy eating habits, sleep deprivation, drinking too little water and not being outside enough. Your skin is the perfect mirror of your lifestyle. But as we do it with pills, we cover up the symptoms instead of changing the roots of the problem. Maybe this sounds harsh, but I believe it is the truth.

I do my best to eat healthily, move, drink and sleep enough. But in between life happens and it doesn’t always work out as planned. What a doom loop. 🙂

Getting ready for some change

However, I was ready to make some steps. Little baby steps. Just in time, I met Dewi van de Waeter. This young Dutch lady started her own company “Lekkerineenpotje” (engl: ‘tasty in a pot’) and is now busy producing and selling 100% natural, organic and cruelty-free bathroom supplies. I interviewed her last week. You can listen to the interview podcast here.

Dewi started eating vegan over two years ago. After she had realized that many of her daily beauty products contain not only chemicals but also animal products, she looked for ways to make her own. After researching and reading studies online, she gave it a shot. She says: “We started trying stuff out with Shea butter, soy wax, coconut oil and essential oils. And then we just started experimenting. There were a lot of products that were not that great and that never made our line. But there were a lot of other products that were absolutely great.”

All of Dewi’s products have a label that shows the ingredients in plain English. “I wanted to make it easy for everyone who is vegan and everyone who cares to know what they put on their skin,” she says. “For example, our current body butter has just three ingredients: coconut oil, essential oils and vitamin E. Vitamin E is a real miracle worker. And that’s it.”

Next to body butter, you can get body scrubs, facial scrubs, hair masks, deodorant, lip balms, lip scrubs, massage candles and foot soaks in their shop.

I ask Dewi if she recognized any changes on her skin after she started using 100% natural bathroom supplies. She makes it clear that the basis for a healthy and beautiful body is something else: “I think the most important thing for your skin is what you eat. When I stopped eating animal products, I really recognized an improvement in my skin. But, also drinking enough water is the basis of all skin related issues.“ However, there wouldn’t be a company if the products weren’t any good. Dewi noticed that scrubbing once a week made her skin look a lot better. She also loves her deodorant. “I still sweat sometimes and first you think it doesn’t work, but you don’t smell anything,” she laughs. I was curious, so I got some of her products to try them out.

The all natural try-out

Already a couple of weeks ago, I threw out some of my conventional bathroom supplies. Instead of face cleanser, I now use pure organic coconut oil. I replaced my conventional deodorant with Dewi’s All Natural Minty Deodorant and instead of conventional body lotion, I use Lekkerineenpotje Cotton Candy Body Butter. For most of the days, I also stay absent of my tinted face cream and makeup powder.

The greatest improvement I saw was on my face skin. It got much shinier and softer. Also, the deeper pores I used to have seem to have minimized. However, what Dewi said about your diet is right. On the days I ate sugary stuff, I could see it almost immediately on my skin.

The All Natural Minty Deodorant worked very well. As Dewi said, you will still sweat (which is a good thing), but it does not smell anymore. I am really happy, that there is a working natural alternative to store-bought deodorant. You can avert all other products, but deodorant is something you really need sometimes. There is a little disadvantage though. As it is based on coconut oil, it is quite solid during colder times of the year. You need to be a little creative to get the deodorant from the jar under your arm pits. That’s, why I give it four out of five points.

Cotton Candy Body Butter is a real treat for your senses. A delicious candy cotton odor welcomes you as soon as you open the jar. Ready to seduce you to put it on a cake instead of your skin. Apparently I am not the only one, that feels like eating it, as you can see on the picture. It is proof enough for me that it is really 100% natural. I give it five points.

The best part: You can make it yourself

Next to selling products, Dewi also gives workshops. She teaches people to make their own natural bathroom supplies. Dewi travels across the Netherlands to give women some insights in her beauty kitchen. “It’s really fun. During the workshop, everyone has aprons on and gets their hand dirty … or clean I guess.” After following the workshop, people know exactly how they can make their own natural beauty products with things they have in their kitchen cupboards. This is probably not very entrepreneurial upon first sight, but it aligns 100% with Dewi’s belief: “We love to give workshops because we love to share our passion. Of course, we like to sell our products, but we also want the entire world to know what they put on their skin.”

I am sure this young lady is onto something. If you would like to get any of her products or follow a workshop, you can contact her via her web shop Lekkerineenpotje or contact@lekkerineenpotje.nl.

  1. yea i use pure coconut oil as deodorant…..everything else is junk. Bad BO is a sign you are unhealthy. The body is putting off gases and toxins…..a lot of people don’t know it or ignore it and think that is natural, which some is, but consistently bad BO is a sign of toxicity and very bad health.
